Tuesday Trial: The Manduka Mat

During my first week at lululemon, I was educated on the differences between Yoga mats. We have four options for you to choose from; The Align Ultra, The Travel mat, The Mat, and The Manduka Mat. Color me confused, but what can be so fancy about something you roll onto the ground? And why would you pay more for one over the other? And who came up with the world Manduka?! I like it.

As soon as you pick this beauty up, it’s clear there is a difference. Manduka means business:

…With its denser, thicker form, unparalleled comfort and cushioning, superior non-slip fabric-like finish, and simple, elegant design the Manduka PRO will revolutionize your practice. And best of all, it now comes with a Lifetime Guarantee. When you want the very best yoga mat, the mat chosen first by yoga teachers throughout the world, there really is only one choice – the Manduka PRO, for your practice and for our world.”

Honestly, I wasn’t sold on the fact that a MAT could really change your practice. I wasn’t convinced that this type of item was worth $90 or that I’d want to carry around an extra 7 lbs in my quest to be a yogi.

I went on, renting studio mats and contemplating the mat options.

Then I tried it. I used it at Vino & Vinyasa one night; things will never be the same.

It’s stable, my hands don’t slip in down dog, it’s purple, and I have no question that it will stay right where I need as I ease into crows and backbends, or attempt a headstand. It’s also thick/firm enough that I could roll it out on carpet (house yoga!) and get my pose on!

I finally bit the bullet and dished out my dollars to Manduka, with no regrets. The purple Pro and I had our first date yesterday at CorePower, and she delivered. It’s the start of a beautiful thing…

I’m not saying you should go out and pay more than you’d like to for a Yoga mat. I am saying that if you practice often, it is something worth doing a little research on!

Did you put any thought into your Yoga mat? Have you ever tried different types to compare?

  1. I do own a yoga mat that I picked up a fitness store a couple years ago… but honestly, the only thing I paid attention to for my selection was colour! (oops)

This one sounds pretty fab! Happy posing!!

Ha, I can get behind that (color preference)! I probably woudln’t have been as drawn to this option if it didn’t come in purple, too. 😉

  2. i’ve never tried anything other than the one i have…but you can bet the extra $90 i have i know what i’m getting! 🙂

  3. I’m in desperate need of a new mat after wearing mine out at Bikram last summer. A good one really makes a world of difference!

    • Heather C

It does! It’s hard to know that until you’ve tested out a few different ones and are able to see what your preferences are.

  4. I’ve actually heard great things about the Manduka mat! I just don’t have the money laying around to buy one right now. Maybe one day…

  5. Well, I’m definitely not a yogi, but I got my mat from TJ Maxx or some similarly cheap place and I definitely notice that it’s not very stellar when I’m doing certain Pilates moves on wood floored studios. You’ll have to update after a few more sessions with your new yoga companion!

  6. I won a pretty quality mat in a giveaway (although not that fancy) and I do think it helps. I’m not a serious yogi by any means, but I love feeling more secure on my mat. I agree its worth looking into for someone really serious about it.

I got my mat as a bday gift last year from my best friend. I think she got it from Target. I don’t know if I could justify spending 90 dollars on a mat.

    • Heather C

As mentioned below, it’s definitely an investment! Depends on priorities, frequency of practice and whatever you feel comfortable on 🙂

  8. Woo, that sure does cost a pretty penny! I actually loved my pink Gaiam mat from Tar-get. And then I decided to upgrade and get the Aurorae mat from Kath’s opensky store for $30 or so. So far I definitely like its thickness over my thinner mat, however, it’s not super sticky. I do believe I need to wash it first though to get the stickyness to really engage. So I’m hoping that happens! For now, the thickness and color (purple or pink for me) are the most important. I’d love to take some classes regularly this winter so I feel like have my yoga groove back. We’ll see what happens and what does or does not pop up onto my race calendar.

It does look beautiful, I’ll give you that. And if I was more consistent in my yoga routine, I might consider it. But as it is, my jaw dropped at that price.

As did mine! It’s definitely an investment, one that I probably wouldn’t have been ready to make w/o my Employee benefit. 🙂

  10. You mean my pack and play version I probably picked up at Target is probably not ideal for me? I never really thought of it. You get what you pay for.

I might have to get a new Man. Manduka that is.

  11. I have a Lulu mat and I like it a lot. It’s double sided color, with the T stripe down the center. I don’t know the name. I like it a lot! This is my second one, but I don’t use it as much as I used to. On another note, I don’t understand why people have fancy mats and then put Yogitoes over it. I mean I get they sweat a lot, but then why buy the expensive mat?

  12. It is crazy how much we will pay for products that are worth every penny! (I often think about my running shoes.)

  13. Thank you so much for this review! I found you while researching this mat and I think I’ll be making the investment. I can’t tell you how many regular yoga mats I have torn through. And for all those mats, I’ve already paid way over that price. Only problem is here in Australia I’ll be paying more like $150!!

  14. My yoga mat is actually a mat from a Winsor Pilates kit. I’ve been debating getting something new, thanks for this review!

  15. i don’t do yoga… but i have a pink mat from target to do pilates on! 🙂

  16. Nice.. I want to have some Manduka Pro also.. Do you know where can I buy some?
